Information
Guatemala’s premier Mayan site is Tikal in the north of the country. Unlike other major Mayan sites in Mexico and Belize, Tikal is unusual in that it is found deep in the rainforest. The workmanship throughout is incredibly intricate and the 40 metre plus temples that shoot up to the sky are extraordinary. If you have a head for heights you can climb many of the temples, the views from the top are breathtaking!
All around there is virgin rainforest, punctuated with other temples rising above the forest canopy. Accommodation is available at the site, however this is pretty basic, a good alternative is to stay 30 kilometres away at Lake Petén Itzá. The lake is wonderful in its own right with a high concentration of wildlife.
