Information

Riobamba is a traditional Ecuadorian market town in the shadow of the towering Chimborazo Volcano. Four hours to the south of Quito, it is also the starting point for one of the world’s most exciting rail journeys; the 100km stretch between Riobamba and Sibambe.

A couple of hours chugging through the high Andes are followed by a rapid descent downwards towards the Pacific Ocean as the line drops a staggering 800 metres! In order to facilitate such a drop, a series of switchbacks were built which have come to be known as the ‘Devils Nose’. The scenery and the engineering skills required to build the line are quite outstanding!
