Information
A region with landscapes as diverse as its cultural heritage, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is an area with strong African, European and Indian influences. From the lively port of Durban in the south, where golden sandy beaches are lapped by the surf of the warm Indian Ocean to the crocodile and hippo filled lakes, pristine game reserves and diving paradise further north, Kwazulu Natal is sometimes described as ‘South Africa in one province’. Inland, the jagged peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains provide visitors with beautiful scenery and a host of scenic self- drives, horse trails and hikes. The region also played host to many important Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer battles and there are numerous historic towns, museums and legendary sites to visit. Here, many of the lodges have resident experts who bring to life the fascinating history of the region.
Wildlife highlights, of which there are many, include large concentrations of White Rhino and other big game at the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Reserve and the whales, dolphins and bird life of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Nearby, Phinda Private Game Reserve boasts 7 superb lodges, contrasting eco-systems and world class game viewing. Further north towards the Mozambique border, you will find unspoiled wilderness, pristine golden beaches and a selection of authentic and low-key lodges. With such diversity and a pleasant winter climate, KZN offers the perfect South African experience.
